Millions of women are bothered and embarrassed by spider veins that commonly appear on the thighs, legs and ankles. Spider veins – known in the medical world as telangiectasias or sunburst varicosities – are small, thin veins that lie close to the surface of the skin.
A number of factors contribute to the development of spider veins, including heredity, pregnancy and other events that cause hormonal shifts, weight gain, occupations or activites that require prolonged sitting or standing and the use of certain medications.
Spider veins usually take on one of three basic patterns. They may appear in a true spider shape with a group of veins radiating outward from a dark central point; they may be arborizing and will resemble tiny branch-like shapes; or they may simply appear as thin separate lines.
Effective, Quick Acting Treatments Available
Advances in science and technology have made treating spider veins a viable option for many. The laser light attacks the red of the superficial spider vein, literally destroying them from the inside out. Another simple procedure known as sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into the superficial veins that cause them to collapse and fade away.
For some, treatment results may occur with a single treatment with the area treated immediately darkening and then simply fading away. For others, multiple treatments may be needed.

Laser Vein Treatment
The CoolTouch™ Varia is also used for laser treatment of spider veins. It has a longer wave length (1064 nm), allowing us to treat larger and deeper leg veins. It is also effective in treating red veins on your nose or face. The CoolTouch™ Varia has a range of spot sizes, pulse widths and power making it effective in treating veins of various sizes. Both small veins or telangiectasias (0.1mm) and larger, reticular veins (up to 2-3mm) can be treated with the CoolTouch™ Varia laser. The number of treatments needed can vary based on a variety of factors including the size and depth of the vein.
In treating veins, the CoolTouch™ Varia laser can be used as the primary treatment of veins or as an adjunct treatment to injection sclerotherapy.
