Laser Acne Treatments and Acne Products
One of the most common skin concerns, acne, can affect people of all ages. It is an inflammatory condition characterized by skin eruptions around hair follicles. While more common in our teens and early 20′s, acne often presents itself in our later years as well. Hormonal changes and heredity are key factors in acne formation. Poor diet, hygiene and stress can aggravate the condition.
Acne is caused when the hair follicles (or pores) on the skin become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. This collection of trapped oil and dead skin cells (follicular plug) become a breeding ground for the bacteria that causes acne, Propionibacterium Acne or P. Acne. As the bacteria grows in the plug, infection and inflammation follow, causing acne outbreak.
Treatment Options Exist For All Types of Acne
There are different degrees of acne and today there are treatments that help all:
Mild Acne – common whiteheads or blackheads that are common
Moderate Acne – red, inflamed bumps ( papules or pimples) and red bumps with white centers (pustules)
Severe Acne – painful, pustular lumps called “nodules”
Acne is not just limited to the face. It often occurs on the back, chest, upper arms, neck and shoulders. Untreated acne may leave scars and hyperpigmentation (discolored skin). This is often referred to as PIH (or post-Inflammatory hyperpigmentation).
Worldwide, the bacterium associated with acne has become resistant to many of our topical acne medications and oral antibiotics. Controversy over Accutane has made acne treatment with this agent more and more problematic. Today, many people want a less risky, more natural approach to treating acne and have turned to Dr. Barad and the Aesthetic Laser Center for help. We have technologies available that many offices do not and we pride ourselves on truly trying to achieve the results that you are seeking on an individual basis.

Blue Light With Levulan
Blue Light Therapy works by shrinking the skin’s oil glands to drastically reduce the amount of oil within the pores – reducing comedones. Resistant and Cystic Acne frequently fails to respond to typical measures of treatment. It offers a safe, highly successful solution to destroying acne bacteria and treating stubborn acne that is not responding to other treatments.
Levulan® is commonly used to significantly improve mild to moderate acne. Blue Light Therapy is an effective alternative for patients whose skin has become resistant to antibiotic treatments over time, and for those who want to avoid the hassle of applying topical ointments and creams. Several types of light sources are commonly used with Levulan® to treat acne, including blue and red light therapy, which, in addition to destroying bacteria, reduces inflammation and redness associated with acne lesions.
